Roads in Sardinia are narrow and sometimes primitively paved, or are covered in a thin sheen of dusty rock.

So why not run a bunch of hot cars over them as fast as they can go?

The Rally Italia Sardegna 2011 Starts tomorrow. Eurosport will carry four of the stages live.

The rally starts in Sedilo, where I spent a couple of summers working mapping and drawing, stone by stone, the ancient Nuraghe in the area. It’s an interesting town, a bit economically depressed because when the railroad was built the powers that be didn’t plan a stop in Sedilo.

But the world’s greatest horse event is held in Sedilo. L’Ardia di San Costantino is fascinating. Like the rally, the track they run on isn’t always optimal. You need to know your animal to put it in this fray, which is why Sardinian riders are always in demand for the much tamer Palio di Siena.
